Originaire de Caroline du Nord, Linda Lee Hopkins grandit au son du groupe de gospel amateur de son père, qui répète à la maison. Une brosse à cheveux en guise de micro, elle imite Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Michael Jackson. Jeune adulte, elle remporte un concours de chant dans un club de Pennsylvanie : le déclic.
Au fil des années 1970, plusieurs formations la recrutent, avant qu'elle ne fonde son propre groupe en 1980. Suivent plusieurs années à l'affiche d'une revue musicale à Atlantic City, puis un séjour sur l'île de Saint-Martin, dans les Caraïbes.
En juin 1991, elle s'installe définitivement à Paris et devient une voix très demandée : Nino Ferrer, Bernard Lavilliers, Gloria Gaynor, Percy Sledge ou Ray Charles font appel à elle. On l'entend en 2002 sur « The Beat Goes On » de Bob Sinclar ; elle dirige un chœur gospel de cent voix à Bercy ; en 2013, elle partage « Hallelujah!!! (J'ai tant besoin de toi) » avec Ben l'Oncle Soul.
Le 31 mai 2024 paraît Spirit & Soul, son premier album sous son nom (Enchanté). Douze titres produits par Christophe Lardeau, puisés aux racines de la musique afro-américaine et dans son propre vécu — dont « You Saved Me », « Just Believe », « Give It All To You » et « One More Chance », en duo avec Ben l'Oncle Soul.
Born in North Carolina, Linda Lee Hopkins grew up to the sound of her father's amateur gospel group rehearsing at home. Hairbrush in hand for a microphone, she mimicked Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Michael Jackson. As a young adult, winning a singing contest at a Pennsylvania club gave her the confidence to go further.
Through the 1970s, several bands recruited her before she formed her own in 1980. Several years followed in a stage musical that ran in Atlantic City, then a spell on the Caribbean island of Saint-Martin.
In June 1991 she settled in Paris for good and became a sought-after vocalist, working with Nino Ferrer, Bernard Lavilliers, Gloria Gaynor, Percy Sledge and Ray Charles. She features on Bob Sinclar's "The Beat Goes On" (2002), has directed a 100-voice gospel choir at Bercy, and in 2013 recorded "Hallelujah!!! (J'ai tant besoin de toi)" with Ben l'Oncle Soul.
Her debut album Spirit & Soul was released on 31 May 2024 (Enchanté): twelve songs produced by Christophe Lardeau, rooted in African-American music and her own life story — including "You Saved Me", "Just Believe", "Give It All To You" and "One More Chance", a duet with Ben l'Oncle Soul.
